MISSION OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Society of Asian Art of Hawai’i, Inc. promotes the pursuit of higher education by awarding scholarship grants to deserving Hawai’i college or university students studying Asian art.
TYPES AND AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
The Scholarship Program is funded from contributions from individuals and organizations as well as fund-raising activities conducted by the Society. for 2014-2015. The Society typically awards $1,000.00 to $4,000.00 in varying amounts, to several students from the following sources:
1. Rhoda E. A. Hackler Asian Art Scholarship Fund
A Scholarship (amount to be determined) is awarded to a student or students majoring in art with a concentration in Asian art. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate art-related major with a concentration in Asian art. Concentration means the courses being taken are primarily in the field of Asian art and lead to a degree in this area.
2. Society of Asian Art of Hawai’i Scholarship Fund
Two or more scholarships (amounts to be determined) are awarded to students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate Asian art-related courses but not necessarily majoring in art.
Award amounts and scholarship sources are determined by the SAAH Inc. Scholarship and Grant Committee depending on the availability of funds
• Applicant must be a Hawai’i resident at time of application and plan to take academic coursework related to Asian art during the 2014-2015 periods.
• Applicant must be a registered college or university student with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time the scholarship is used.
• Applicant must complete the application and provide all required documents by the stated deadline. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to request supplemental materials from any applicant.
• Previous scholarship awardees are eligible to reapply. However, bachelor and master degree awardees are limited to two awards in total and doctoral degree awardees are limited to three awards in total.
The completed application and all supporting documents are due by Wednesday June 30, 2014. Absolutely no deadline extensions or exceptions will be granted. Awards will be announced sometime during summer of 2014 and scholarship checks will be presented to recipients at the Society’s first evening meeting in September (date to be determined).

III. APPLICATION ESSAY
Write a double-spaced essay introducing yourself and your academic background, and provide specific information about what Asian art courses you have taken and will take (give course alpha and title, with dates completed or proposed). Discuss why you are interested in Asian art and how you would benefit from receiving a scholarship award. Also provide an overview of your career plans, with specific reference to how your study of Asian art will enhance your career goals. Also list any Asia art-related activities or events you have or plan to participate in and any awards, grants or honors you have received. Also mention if you are studying an Asian language as a complement to your Asian art coursework and evaluate your current level of proficiency.
IV. GRADE POINT AVERAGE & ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT
Your Grade Point Average (4.0 scale; most recently completed term)
Include with your application a copy of your official academic transcript. This may be a transcript issued to you by your institution’s registrar’s office or it can be an official transcript mailed directly to the Society by your academic institution. If the latter, be sure that the transcript arrives by the application deadline.
V. VERIFICATION OF FUTURE ASIA ART COURSEWORK
To verify that you will be taking specific Asia art-related courses during the fall 2015 semester, include a copy of your course registration form showing the title of the courses you will take. You may also send, in lieu of a registration form, a printout of any schedule showing the courses you have already registered in for the upcoming semester.
VI. LETTERS OF REFERENCE (Optional)
You may submit one or two letters of reference from educators, curators, or others familiar with your interest in and study of Asian art. Please include any references with your completed application form.
VII. EXPECTATIONS OF AWARDEES
Students awarded scholarships receive an honorary student membership in the Society and are invited to attend presentations and Society meetings between September and April. Awardees are also invited to attend, gratis, the Society’s banquets around Chinese New Year and in May. At the May dinner awardees are required to give in person or submit in writing a report about the academic work they engaged in while receiving scholarship support. At the completion of the scholarship award period, scholarship recipients are required to summit an official transcript verifying completed course work relating to Asian art in proof that the courses listed in the application have been successfully completed. This is to be received by the Society within sixty days after the course work has been completed.
By submitting this application via email or U.S. mail, I hereby certify that all information contained herein and any supporting documentation is true and complete to the best of my knowledge and belief.
Furthermore; if for any reason I fail to complete my anticipated course work or provide the official transcript, I understand and agree that I am obligated to repay to the Society within sixty days after the end of the semester any funds awarded to me.
I further authorize the release of any and all information contained herein and the supporting documents for the sole purpose of promoting the scholarship awards and the recipients and do hereby release the Society of Asian Art of Hawai’i, Inc., its officers, directors, members, agents, employees, and affiliates, from any and all claims relating to the release thereof.
